UEFA Football Shirt Rules 2026/27: Sponsors, Numbers & Kit Design

A practical guide to UEFA 2026/27 shirt rules covering names, numbers, sponsor areas, reserved zones and design checks for clubs and kit suppliers.

Football-shirt artwork is not only a design decision. Clubs entering regulated competitions need to plan names, numbers, sponsors, badges and manufacturer identification around the applicable competition rules. A visually strong shirt can still require changes if a number is difficult to read or advertising enters a reserved area.

This guide summarises practical points from the official 2026 UEFA equipment and Champions League regulations. It is an operational overview, not a substitute for the regulations or approval from a club's national association and competition organiser.

Player names and fixed squad numbers

For the 2026/27 UEFA Champions League, player names must appear on the back of shirts from the play-offs. From the league phase, registered players use set numbers from 1 to 99; number 1 is reserved for a goalkeeper. A player cannot use more than one number for the same team during the competition.

These requirements make roster control part of production. Before printing, a club should approve spelling, accents, shirt names and the number assigned to each registered player. Late corrections are expensive when names and numbers have already been sublimated into completed panels.

Keep the number zone clear

UEFA defines a zone around the back number that must remain free of team identification, manufacturer marks and advertising. This protects legibility for officials, spectators and broadcasts. Complex gradients, stripes or textures therefore need to be tested behind the number rather than approved only as an isolated front-shirt design.

A useful pre-production proof should show the full rear view with the longest expected player name and a two-digit number. Check contrast at normal viewing distance and in both light and dark colourways.

Front and sleeve sponsor placement

The 2026 UEFA Equipment Regulations allow defined sponsor positions subject to competition and national-association approval. The front sponsor is positioned centrally at chest/torso height and its permitted area is controlled. UEFA club competitions also reserve specific sleeve areas for competition badges and approved sleeve advertising.

Do not reuse a domestic-league layout automatically for a UEFA fixture. Badge, sponsor and charity-logo permissions can differ, and competition marks may need protected space. Obtain written approval before bulk application.

A practical artwork checklist

  • Confirm the exact competition and current edition of its regulations.
  • Use approved vector files for the crest, sponsors and manufacturer identity.
  • Mark protected number, badge and sleeve zones on the panel template.
  • Test number contrast against the actual back pattern and colour.
  • Approve fonts, character heights, spacing and player-name spelling.
  • Create separate home, away and goalkeeper proofs.
  • Record which party owns regulatory approval.
  • Keep the approved proof and roster as production-control documents.

Sublimation and regulated shirt artwork

Full sublimation can integrate patterns, sponsors, names and numbers into polyester panels, but that flexibility makes artwork control especially important. A graphic that crosses a seam may not align perfectly unless the panels and tolerances are designed for it. Plan sizing before assigning every shirt

A competition-compliant design can still fail operationally if the roster and garment sizes are not locked together. Clubs should measure players, approve the size chart and then connect each name and number to the correct size. Our club football-shirt sizing guide explains that workflow.

Frequently asked questions

Can a club place any sponsor anywhere on a UEFA shirt?

No. Sponsor permissions, areas and positions are regulated and may also require national-association approval.

Can a patterned back run through the player number?

The number must remain legible and the defined number zone must be kept clear of prohibited identification and advertising. Confirm the final design against the official rules.

Who should approve the final kit?

The club should identify an authorised approval owner and obtain any required approval from its association or competition organiser before bulk production.
