Varsity Jacket Color Combinations: Ideas for Teams and Brands

Popular varsity jacket color combinations, from green and white to black and gold, orange and black and maroon and grey, plus team color matching tips.

A varsity jacket uses three color zones (body, sleeves and knit stripes) plus the color of the letters. The right mix makes a team jacket instantly recognizable. Here are the combinations buyers ask for most, and how they are usually built.

Green varsity jackets

Green is the most searched varsity jacket color. Dark green and white is the classic; green and gold or green and yellow suit collegiate teams; green and black is a streetwear staple. Pine green, olive green, lime green and forest green bodies all work, usually with white or cream sleeves. Green and orange is a bolder choice, closely linked to the orange-lined flight bomber.

Grey and gray varsity jackets

A grey body goes with almost anything. Red and grey is a long-standing school favorite; grey with navy or black sleeves keeps it understated.

Orange varsity jackets

Orange needs a strong partner: orange and black, orange and blue, or orange and white. Teams with a tiger mascot often go black-bodied with orange sleeves, or the reverse.

Yellow and blue

Yellow varsity jackets pair naturally with blue, as blue and yellow or yellow and blue letterman jackets. Blue and black is a darker alternative.

Maroon, purple and teal

A maroon varsity jacket is classic collegiate, especially with gold or white. Purple and black (or black and purple) suits bolder team colors. Teal letterman jackets stand out because few teams use them.

Black with gold or green

A black body with gold chenille reads as premium and suits award jackets. Swap the gold for green and you have a look streetwear labels love.

Red and white, red and grey

Red bodies with white or grey sleeves are among the most traditional high school combinations.

Matching your team colors

  1. Send Pantone references or a physical swatch.
  2. Wool, knit and sleeves are dyed separately, so each is matched on the sample.
  3. Approve the sample; it becomes the color standard for your order.

Every combination is available on custom varsity jackets, cropped jackets and blank jackets. USSportWear makes jackets in team and brand quantities; see the varsity jacket manufacturer page.
