How to Wash a Varsity Jacket Without Ruining It

How to wash and clean a varsity or letterman jacket at home, care for leather and vinyl sleeves, protect chenille, and when to dry clean.

The short answer: don't put a wool-and-leather varsity jacket in the washing machine. Wool shrinks, leather and vinyl crack, and chenille letters fuzz up. Clean it by hand at home and leave deep cleaning to a professional who handles leather.

Can you wash a letterman jacket in the machine?

Only if the label says so. A few budget jackets made entirely of polyester or fleece tolerate a cold, gentle cycle. Anything with a wool body or leather or vinyl sleeves should be hand cleaned.

How to clean a letterman jacket at home

  1. Empty the pockets and brush it. A soft garment brush lifts dust from the wool.
  2. Treat spots, don't soak. Mix a few drops of wool wash in cold water, dab the stain with a white cloth, then dab again with plain water.
  3. Wipe the sleeves. Leather: a barely damp cloth, then leather cleaner. Vinyl: mild soapy water, then dry immediately.
  4. Go easy on chenille. Dab around letters and patches. A lint roller removes loose fibers.
  5. Air dry on a wide hanger, away from radiators and sunlight.

Cleaning a varsity jacket with leather sleeves

Every six months or so, work a little leather conditioner into the sleeves to stop them drying out. Test any cleaner inside the cuff first, and keep moisture away from the seam where the leather joins the wool.

Looking after vinyl sleeves

Vinyl (synthetic leather) only needs a wipe. A vinyl protectant applied a couple of times a year helps prevent cracking; avoid solvents and heat.

Should I dry clean my varsity jacket?

For a full clean, yes, but choose a cleaner who works with leather and ask them to protect the sleeves. Standard dry cleaning can dry out leather.

How to wash a bomber jacket

Nylon bombers are tougher: zip them up, turn them inside out and wash cold on a gentle cycle if the label allows, then hang to dry. A leather bomber never goes in the machine; give it the same wipe-and-condition routine as leather sleeves.

Storage

Use a padded hanger and a breathable cotton garment bag, never plastic. Wool attracts moths, so store it clean and dry.

Sourcing FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Not in a machine if it has wool or leather. Spot-clean at home and use a leather-experienced dry cleaner for a deep clean.

Brush and spot-clean the wool with cold water and wool wash, wipe the sleeves with leather cleaner, then condition the leather.

Most nylon bombers survive a cold, gentle machine wash turned inside out. Treat a leather bomber like leather sleeves: wipe, then condition.
