Soccer Ball Sizes 3, 4 & 5: Age Guide for Clubs and Schools

A practical soccer-ball size chart for youth and adult programmes, plus ordering checks for clubs, schools, academies and bulk buyers.

Choosing the correct soccer-ball size matters for player control, coaching and competition preparation. Clubs and schools often need more than one size because their programmes include several age groups. A bulk request should therefore state quantities by size instead of asking for one mixed total.

Soccer-ball size chart

Size Common age guidance Approximate circumference Typical use
Size 1 All ages About 18–20 in Skills, mini and promotional use
Size 3 Under 8 About 23–24 in Young-player training and matches where specified
Size 4 About 8–12 About 25–26 in Youth football programmes
Size 5 About 13 and older About 27–28 in Older youth and adult play

These are widely used guidance bands, but the competition or local league rules take priority. Confirm the required size before ordering.

Size 3 soccer balls

Size 3 is commonly used for younger children because its smaller circumference is easier to control. For a school or academy order, state the age group, playing surface, expected training frequency and whether the design needs a crest or sponsor mark.

Size 4 soccer balls

Size 4 bridges junior and full adult equipment. It is common in youth programmes, so academies often require a larger stock of this size. Do not combine its quantity with size 5 on the purchase order: list each size, design and packaging requirement separately.

Size 5 soccer balls

Size 5 is the standard full-size ball used by older youth and adults. “Size 5” does not describe construction quality. A promotional PVC ball, durable training ball and match-oriented thermally bonded ball can all share the same nominal size while performing differently.

Size is only one part of a ball specification

  • Use: training, match, school PE, tournament, promotional or retail.
  • Construction: hand stitched, machine stitched or thermally bonded.
  • Cover material: the specified PU or PVC system and backing layers.
  • Bladder and valve: chosen around air retention and playing characteristics.
  • Pressure: use the range marked on the exact ball or agreed specification.
  • Artwork: logo files, colours, panel placement and proof approval.
  • Testing: define any circumference, weight, rebound, roundness or air-retention requirements.

How many balls should a club order?

The answer depends on squad count, simultaneous sessions, replacement stock and whether coaches maintain separate match balls. Build the requirement team by team, then add a controlled reserve. Avoid choosing a quantity only to reach a price break if the programme has no storage or maintenance plan.

Custom logos and private-label programmes

A club ball normally needs an approved crest, colour treatment and a clearly defined use. A private-label retail ball also needs packaging, product naming, barcodes, care information and inspection criteria. Request an artwork proof and physical sample before the full run.

Our soccer-ball manufacturing page explains the specification workflow, while the custom soccer-ball buyer guide covers artwork and programme planning.

Frequently asked questions

What size soccer ball does an under-10 team usually use?

Size 4 is commonly used for players around ages 8–12, but the applicable league rules should be checked.

Is every size 5 ball a match ball?
