How boxing and MMA gloves differ in design, padding and use, and how gyms and retailers can plan a glove range that fits their members.

Gyms and combat-sports retailers are often asked which gloves to buy. Boxing and MMA gloves look similar on a shelf but are built for different jobs. This guide compares them and shows how to plan a glove range for your members or customers.

The main difference

Boxing gloves enclose the hand fully, with thick padding to protect the hands during punching. MMA gloves have open fingers and much less padding so fighters can grab, clinch and grapple.

Side-by-side comparison

  • Fingers: boxing gloves are closed; MMA gloves are open.
  • Padding: boxing gloves are heavily padded; MMA gloves are thinner, with sparring versions padded more than competition versions.
  • Weight: boxing gloves are commonly about 8 oz to 16 oz; MMA gloves are lighter.
  • Closure: boxing gloves use hook-and-loop or laces; MMA gloves usually use a hook-and-loop wrist strap.
  • Best for: boxing gloves suit boxing, bag and pad work and boxercise; MMA gloves suit MMA training and mixed classes.

Which should a gym stock?

It depends on your classes:

  • Boxing and fitness gyms: boxing gloves in several weights, plus lighter fitness gloves for classes.
  • MMA gyms: MMA sparring gloves for partner work, plus boxing gloves for striking sessions.
  • Mixed gyms: both, so members have the right glove for each class.

Planning a private-label glove range

Many gyms and brands sell gloves under their own name. A simple starter range might be:

  1. A fitness boxing glove in PU synthetic leather
  2. A training boxing glove in two or three weights
  3. An MMA sparring glove

Leather suits a premium line; PU keeps entry prices lower. Approve samples of each glove before bulk production, and only make protection or safety claims you can document.

Frequently asked questions

Can MMA gloves be used for bag work?

Some are designed for it, but thin competition gloves give little protection. Most gyms recommend boxing gloves for heavy bag work.

Can I order boxing and MMA gloves in one order?

Usually yes. Minimum quantities per style are confirmed in your quotation.
