"Down jacket," "puffer jacket," and "insulated jacket" get used almost interchangeably — here's what actually separates them, and what each term means for a buyer.
What Is a Down Jacket?
A down jacket is a jacket insulated with down — the soft, fluffy under-layer of feathers found beneath a bird's tougher exterior feathers, usually sourced from ducks or geese. Down is prized for insulation because it traps air in small pockets between its fine filaments, and trapped air is what actually keeps you warm — down itself doesn't generate heat, it just holds your body's own heat in place extremely efficiently for its weight.
"Down" specifically refers to this feather-based fill. A jacket described as a down jacket is making a claim about what's actually inside it, not just how it looks.
What Is a Puffer Jacket?
"Puffer jacket" describes a jacket's construction, not its fill material. A puffer jacket is quilted into a grid of small, stitched-together pockets (baffles) that hold the insulation in place and give the jacket its recognizable puffy, segmented look. Without those baffles, loose insulation would just shift to the bottom of the jacket under gravity and leave the shoulders bare.
Critically: a puffer jacket can be filled with down, or it can be filled with synthetic insulation. "Puffer" tells you about the shape and stitching, not what's inside.

This is why the comparison confuses people: they're not two competing categories, they're answers to two different questions.
- "Down jacket" answers: what's the insulation made of? (Answer: real feather down.)
- "Puffer jacket" answers: how is the jacket constructed? (Answer: quilted baffles holding insulation in place.)
Most down jackets are also puffer jackets, because baffled construction is the standard way to keep down evenly distributed. But not every puffer jacket contains real down — many use synthetic fill instead, and are still accurately called "puffer jackets."
What Is an Insulated Jacket?
"Insulated jacket" is the broadest of the three terms — it simply means a jacket with any kind of thermal insulation layer, whether that's down, synthetic fiberfill, or another material entirely. Both down jackets and puffer jackets are types of insulated jackets, but not every insulated jacket is a puffer (some use a flat insulation layer without baffled quilting) or contains down (many use synthetic fill instead).
Down vs Synthetic Insulation
- Down — better warmth-to-weight ratio and more compressible, but loses most of its insulating ability when wet and takes longer to dry
- Synthetic insulation (polyester fiberfill) — heavier for the same warmth, but retains most of its insulating ability even when damp, dries faster, and is significantly less expensive to produce at scale
